Continuity and Educational Experiences
Inpatient Experience/Call
Call will vary depending on the number of residents and what rotation you are on. PGY1 call is dependent on the rotation you are on. Beginning PGY2, residents begin taking beeper call from home, where they manage outpatient calls from the FPC, but also will go to the hospital and admit and manage FPC patients under the hospitalists. While on call, the resident will round daily in the morning with the hospitalist. Call is taken a week at a time. No matter how many residents, you will not be on call more than an average of one week out of every three weeks.
Practice Management
One Friday per month, a lunch meeting with the FPC Practice Manager will be set up with OGME 2 and 3 residents to review monthly statistics, answer coding questions, discuss reimbursement issues, and occasionally have guest speakers addressing a variety of topics.
Journal Club
Once a week the residents meet with one of the attendings and any interested students to discuss two journal articles. The second Thursday of the month (may vary), the residents meet with the Orthopedic residents for Fracture Conference at 6:30 a.m.
Board Review
During most of the year, residents and interested students meet weekly to go through a board review series.
Geriatrics/Nursing Home
Starting in the OGME2 year, residents will spend one half day per month, or one Saturday per month, with a local physician as he or she rounds at a nursing home. The goal is for the resident to become familiar with nursing home care, medications, and issues. The resident should see the same set of patients each month.
Tumor Board
Tumor Board is presented at Affinity Medical Center every Thursday. Cases of cancer are presented. Often, radiologists will share pertinent imaging studies, and the pathologists give brief explanations of findings and occasional lectures. This is a great opportunity to learn about hematology/oncology, as the cases are discussed by surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologist, and pathologists. OGME 1 residents are expected to attend all Tumor Boards that they can as part of the OGME 1 experience. OGME 2 residents are expected to attend at least 12 Tumor Boards per year, and OGME 3 residents are expected to attend a minimum of 10.
RPACs
Affinity Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency is affiliated with Ohio University and the CORE (Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education) System. As such, the CORE usually has eight RPAC (Residency Program Advisory Committee) educational meetings yearly, where all CORE family practice residents are required to attend. For example, every year a two day Colposcopy Course is presented for all PGY2 residents. Additionally, all residents are required to participate in an annual OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Exam). Other topics for RPAC meetings include practice management, OMM, professional development, and office procedures.
In-Service Exams
Each fall, the ACOFP offers an in-service exam that all residents participate in.
