Brief Introduction

We have approval for 5 general surgical residents by the AOA and ACOS. Initiated in 1981 at Doctors Hospital of Stark County and has continued without interruption at Affinity Medical Center.

Mission and Vision

It is the goal and purpose of this general surgery residency program in collaboration with the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, to educate and train osteopathic physicians to become expert general surgeons who meet or exceed the criteria of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

General Program Information

We are affiliated with OU-COM and a member of the "CORE." General Surgery residents also cover and scrub in for cardio-thoracic cases as well as major oncologic and gynecologic cases and maintain an active resident run outpatient clinic.

Curriculum (Please break this down by PGY year)

OGME-1

1st Six months: rotating through the Emergency Room, Internal Medicine, ICU
2nd Six months: General Surgery or surgical electives
Half day of the Family Practice clinic for 46 weeks.

OGME-2

11 months General Surgery as residents assigned 1:1 with General Surgeon on monthly rotations
1 month pathology rotation

OGME-3

6 months General Surgery monthly rotation at AMC
6 months Elective out rotations

OGME-4

6 months General Surgery monthly rotations at AMC
6 months Elective out rotations

OGME-5

Assume Chief Resident responsibilities
12 months General Surgery on monthly rotations at AMC

Didactic Schedule (subject to change)

  • Residents case presentation to House Staff at 7am First Tuesday each month
  • Residents lecture to House Staff at 7am Second Tuesday each month
  • Journal Club at 6:30am every Wednesday
  • Book Club/Board review every Thursday
  • General Surgery RPAC Educational Progra, 4th Tuesday every month through OU-COM “CORE” based on a four year rotating curriculum
  • Participation in yearly in-service exam from ACOS
  • Bedside teaching Rounds
